On Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at about 7:00 am, Yuma Police Detectives located Michael McCormick at a room in the Torchlite Lodge, 2501 South 4th Avenue. McCormick was wanted in reference to several burglaries and stolen vehicles in Yuma.

McCormick was reported to be armed. The Yuma Police Department's Special Enforcement Team and Hostage Negotiation Team responded to the scene. The Torchlite Lodge was evacuated and several side streets and businesses were closed or access was restricted. McCormick was contacted by telephone and was uncooperative. He was also in the company of an adult female acquaintance.

As the Special Enforcement Team was attempting capture, McCormick broke through the roof of the lodge and fled east to the Yuma Home Park, 2550 South Virginia Drive. The adult female was contacted in the room and treated for minor injuries due to chemical exposure. Her involvement in this incident remains under investigation.

McCormick broke into a trailer home at the Yuma Home Park and continued his standoff with police.

McCormick eventually surrendered and was taken into custody at 3:58 pm. He was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and chemical exposure. He will be treated and transported to the Yuma Police Department for further investigation.
