On Sunday October 4, 2009 the Yuma Fire Department received a mutual aid request from the Imperial Valley Strike Team. At approximately 4:15 am an Engine and four YFD personnel left Yuma to meet with other Strike Team members in Calipatria, CA. A Strike Team usually consists of 5 engines drawn from area departments. The team will stay together through their deployment and are expected to be used for structure protect duties.
The assembled team was notified they were being assigned to the “Sheep” fire and are heading to the area of Wrightwood, CA in San Bernardino County. The Sheep fire is a rapidly growing fire in Southern California that has already destroyed several homes, and is endangering many others. The fire was being driven by 40 mph winds.
