AVENUE A EAST SIDE RELIEF COMING; TRAFFIC SIGNAL AT 32nd STREET AND ARIZONA; DELAYS ON 16th STREET BRIDGE
ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction
A contractor working for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010. To provide a safe work zone for construction crews and to facilitate the accelerated schedule, traffic has been limited to one travel lane in each direction on the I-8 bridge. Traffic is moving through the area and business access is open.
ADOT will begin placing traffic control barriers on the I-8 bridge, restricting traffic to one lane in each direction, on Thursday, Oct. 1 during the nighttime hours. Traffic will utilize the two center lanes on the bridge, and at times there will be intermittent traffic stoppages up to 20 minutes allowing crews a safe work zone to install barriers along the outer lanes of the bridge. Left turns onto the interstate from 16th Street are not allowed; however, left turns off of the interstate are allowed onto 16th Street.
Beginning the week of Oct. 5, ADOT will be installing a temporary traffic signal at Redondo Center Drive. There will be intermittent stoppages on 16th Street using local law enforcement officers to stop traffic for up to 20 minutes at a time to allow temporary traffic signal wire to be pulled across 16th Street. Traffic will be allowed to continue through the work zone once it is safe to proceed.
Temporary traffic signals have already been installed at both the east and west end of the I-8 bridge. These temporary signals have been activated and the old traffic signals will be removed.

16th - Arizona Intersection Improvements - 15th Street/Arizona Closed
Arizona Avenue is closed between 15th and 16th streets and 15th Street is closed through Tuesday, Oct. 6 while the contractor's crews make improvements in that area, including a northbound taper lane, curb and gutter. Access to businesses at the northeast corner of 16th and Arizona will be via right turns off of westbound 16th only.
Arizona remains closed south of 16th Street to allow the contractor to complete the water transmission line, which will be followed by complete surface reconstruction. 16th Street will continue to have one lane of traffic open in each direction at this intersection.
DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.
Avenue A Widening - East Side Pavement Coming
Starting approximately Thursday, Oct. 8, the City's contractor will begin paving the remainder of the eastern side of Avenue A. By approximately Oct. 13, north-south traffic along the avenue between 16th and 24th streets will moved to the east-side lanes and demolition and reconstruction will begin on the west side of Avenue A.
The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
Carver Park Neighborhood Reconstruction - Magnolia Avenue Open
Magnolia Avenue is open between 1st Street and 8th Street following road reconstruction. Crews may remain for sidewalk work.
Arizona Avenue South Of 32nd Street
Traffic signals at 32nd Street and Arizona Avenue are expected to be reactivated and Arizona Avenue south of 32nd Street reopened early next week, following successful repair of a manhole that collapsed following the Labor Day weekend rainstorm. In the meantime, motorists needing access to areas south of 32nd Street should use 4th Avenue Extension and can reconnect with Arizona Avenue at 40th Street.
