ADOT's 16th Street Project To Begin; 24th Street Narrow At Avenue A; Arizona Closed At 32nd Street
ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction To Begin
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will begin work on the widening of 16th Street on Monday, Sept. 14. The work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and may be adjusted during the winter months based on available daylight hours. There will be night work as well. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010. To provide a safe work zone for construction crews and facilitate the aggressive schedule, traffic will be limited to one travel lane in each direction through the area until late December, when an additional lane in each direction is anticipated to be opened to accommodate increased winter traffic.
There will be no left turns permitted from 16th Street throughout the work zone. However, left turns onto 16th Street will be allowed from Redondo Center Drive and Arizona Avenue (once the City completes the Arizona Avenue Improvements). Access will be provided to all businesses throughout the improvement project, although motorists may need to take detours that provide for right turns off 16th Street or to reach businesses using streets located behind businesses. Signs will be posted to assist motorists in accessing businesses.
Traffic signs and message boards will provide details; flaggers will direct traffic and law enforcement will be present. Wide loads will be limited to 11 feet. ADOT advises motorists to comply with all posted restrictions throughout the project area. Once barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices have been set up through the project limits between Yuma Palms Parkway and Arizona Avenue, crews can begin to remove the existing median on the bridge over the Interstate. Median removal will be conducted behind traffic barricades and is anticipated to begin the week of Sept. 21.
This is a joint project between ADOT and the City of Yuma. Funding for this $10.79 million project is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) as part of the federal economic stimulus program and all materials are required to be made in America.

16th - Arizona Intersection Improvements
Maple Avenue is closed at 16th Street beginning Tuesday to allow the contractor to complete the water transmission line at the west end of the 16th Street/Arizona Avenue project, which will be followed by complete surface reconstruction. 16th Street will continue to have one lane of traffic open in each direction at this intersection. Access to Wendy's/Liquid Fuels and Motel 6 will require using 1st Avenue south to 17th Street, then north on Maple to enter through the southern driveway of the Wendy's parking lot. This phase of construction is expected to take 3 to 4 weeks. Access to the Cigar Shop should now be attained through the Chretin's parking lot.
Left turns are prohibited along 16th Street between Riley Avenue and up to but not including 1st Avenue. Motorists should leave a few minutes early and plan ahead to compensate for left turn restrictions. Note and observe detour signs and traffic control devices, as they may change.
DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.
Avenue A Widening
24th Street is expected be reduced to one lane in each direction during the upcoming week while work at the intersection of Avenue A and 24th Street continues.
Paving continues on the eastern side of Avenue A. North-south traffic along the avenue has been moved to the east-side lanes between 16th and 19th streets.
The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
Carver Park Neighborhood Reconstruction - Magnolia Avenue
Magnolia Avenue is closed north of 5th Street to 1st Street for road reconstruction. Magnolia has now been paved between 5th and 8th streets but may close temporarily there for adjustments. For north-south travel between 1st and 8th streets, use Avenue A or Avenue B. Construction is expected to be completed in the next 2-3 weeks.
Arizona Avenue South Of 32nd Street
Arizona Avenue is closed at the southern side of 32nd Street while City crews pump a sewer line clear that was damaged following a recent heavy rainstorm. Traffic signals were out at that intersection, which is operating as a four-way stop until repairs can be made. Motorists needing access to areas south of 32nd Street should use 4th Avenue Extension.
