Shortly after 11:00 am today, the Yuma Fire Department responded to the 1900 block of West 18th Place for a report of a transformer on fire. Upon their approach, arriving firefighters found live power lines down in the area with small fires ignited of surrounding grass and trees.

Streets in the surrounding area were closed off to traffic. An unknown number of homes were affected by the subsequent power outage.  APS is working on restoring power, but it is unknown at this time how many homes are affected and how long the power will be out.

At this time, the Civic Center on Avenue A is open for citizens who are without power and are seeking a cool place to stay until their power is restored.

Additional information will be delivered once it becomes available.
