On Friday August 28, 2009 at 8:17 pm a fire was reported in the area of 5th Street and Madison Avenue. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found heavy smoke coming from 500 South Madison Avenue. Firefighters located the fire burning in the room inside the front door. The fire was contained and extinguished quickly with damage mostly limited to the room it originated in. The residence was being extensively remodeled and it is currently vacant.
A second fire in a commercial dumpster near the building was also extinguished. There were no injuries. The fires appeared to have been intentionally set and both fire and police investigators were working on the scene. Anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact Fire Investigator Juan Huerta at 373-4850, or the Yuma Police Department at 373-4700.
This is the second fire in the 500 block of Madison Avenue this week. The two fires are not connected. Thursday morning’s fire at 532 S. Madison Ave. was determined to have originated in the home’s electrical wiring.
Neighborhood residents should always pay attention to vacant buildings in their area. Vacant buildings can attract unlawful behavior, but watchful neighbors can make a difference. Reporting suspicious activity to the police department can prevent crime and make your neighborhood safer for everyone.
