Road Report for August 27, 2009
Date:
08/27/2009Summary:
This week’s update of City of Yuma road construction projects.Contact:
Avenue A Traffic To Switch Lanes; Progress At Arizona Avenue; Magnolia Closer To Completion
Avenue A Widening
Avenue A was reopened this week to through traffic at its intersection with 16th Street, and 16th Street was reopened to two lanes in each direction at that point. Traffic signals will operate in separate phases for northbound and southbound travelers, allowing for left turns onto 16th Street.
Paving continues on the eastern side of Avenue A. As paving becomes complete between 16th Street and approximately 22nd Street, north-south traffic along the avenue will be moved to the east-side lanes and work will shift to the west-side lanes currently being used for traffic.
The week of Sept. 7, work will take place on a water transmission line underneath Avenue A at 24th Street, affecting that intersection.
The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
16th - Arizona Intersection Improvements
Arizona Avenue is closed southbound at 16th Street and traffic on 16th Street traffic is being redirected onto lanes on the north side of the street, remaining reduced to one lane in each direction in this vicinity. From the north, southbound Arizona traffic may turn right (westbound) onto 16th Street. From the east, westbound 16th Street traffic may turn right (northbound) onto Arizona Avenue.
Left turns are prohibited along 16th Street between Riley Avenue and Maple Avenue. Access will be provided at all times to those businesses along these portions of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue. Motorists should leave a few minutes early and plan ahead to compensate for left turn restrictions. Note and observe detour signs and traffic control devices, as they may change.
DPE, a local contractor working for the City of Yuma is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include 6 lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.
This project will eventually run concurrently with the larger ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction Project between Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive and a just east of the Arizona Avenue intersection. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction along 16th Street, with no left turns permitted, between Maple Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway.
Carver Park Neighborhood Reconstruction - Magnolia Getting Closer
Magnolia Avenue is closed north of 5th Street to 1st Street for road reconstruction. Magnolia has now been paved between 5th and 8th streets but may close temporarily there for adjustments. For north-south travel between 1st and 8th streets, use Avenue A or Avenue B. Construction is expected to be completed in the next 3-4 weeks.
East 24th Street School Area Speed Limits - Corrected Times
Variable speed limit signs are active on East 24th Street near Desert Mesa Elementary, Castle Dome Middle and Otondo Elementary schools. Speed limits are 25 mph each weekday morning from 7 to 7:50 a.m., and afternoons 2:20 to 3 p.m. weekdays except Wednesdays, when the speed limit zones will be active 12:50 to 1:30 p.m. (to accommodate Yuma Elementary School District 1's early dismissal days).
Outside of these designated times, the 24th Street speed limit in that vicinity will be 45 mph.
1st Street Between 6th And 5th Avenues
The right eastbound lane of 1st Street will be closed between 6th and 5th avenues on Sept. 2-3 for private utility work.
