Yuma, Arizona - Employees of the City of Yuma Police Department, Fire Department and Parks & Recreation Department responded to the following calls for service and reports of vandalism and graffiti this week.

Yuma Fire Department

For the week of August 9th through August 15th, Yuma Fire Department responded to 192 Emergency Calls for Service, which included:

  • 9 Commercial Assignments, including: a fire in a clean up bin from a previous commercial fire, and various false alarms
  • 23 Motor Vehicle Crashes, including: one vehicle vs. a fence, one semi truck vs. a power pole, and one accident involving three vehicles
  • 138 Other Medical Emergencies (serious to minor) -  20 for difficulty breathing, 15 for chest pain, 6 fall victims, 16 unconscious people, 6 seizure cases, 4 diabetic emergencies, 2 possible stroke cases, 2 suicidal patients, 4 possible overdose cases, 4 allergic reactions, 2 calls for children locked inside of vehicles, 3 for heat related emergencies or dehydration, 1 water rescue, and misc. other illnesses and injuries
  • 22 Special Duty, Public Assistance, and Residential Assignments for a kitten rescued from inside a wall, 4 dumpster/trash receptacle fires, 2 calls for a smoke alarm sounding due to burned food in the kitchen, a call for a resident burning tree trimmings illegally, a power line that arced and started a small grass fire, and various alarms

This weekend the Yuma Fire Department responded to the Colorado River for two separate calls for a water rescue. The first was for a woman who jumped off the railroad bridge and struck a submerged object. Due to water levels and heights involved, jumping off of bridges into the river is very dangerous behavior (and also illegal!) The railroad bridge is also the property of the Union Pacific railroad and persons trespassing on it are subject to arrest.

The second was for a woman who waded out approximately 30 feet into the water, got tired, and could not swim back on her own. A rescue line was thrown to her and she was assisted to shore.
Be sure of your swimming abilities and your physical capabilities. Even walking in the water can wear a person out if done long enough or if you are not in good enough physical condition.

August is "Drowning Impact Awareness Month," and the Yuma Fire Department wants to remind residents that caution should be taken when spending time around any body of water, especially the river. The Colorado is a live river, sand bars change and what may have been shallow the last time you were there, could be a deep hole now. Also, please remember that alcoholic beverages are only allowed in the park by permit, and often play a part in water related accidents.

Although this weekend's incidents both involved adults, Yumans are reminded that children 4 years old and under are in the highest risk category for drowning. Children should have relentless responsible adult supervision, and adults supervising children should be capable swimmers.Enjoy the great recreational opportunities that have been created for us along the Colorado, but use them wisely. As we continue into the water recreation season, let's make this a season of safety.
