Road Report for July 2, 2009
Date:
07/02/2009 (Last updated: 07/20/2009)Summary:
This week’s update of City of Yuma road construction projects.Contact:
Traffic Signal Installation to Bring Changes at 22nd Drive; Avenue A Tightening pP
24th Street, Camino Alameda to Avenue B (affecting 22nd Drive and 21st Drive)
The City is preparing to activate the traffic signal at 22nd Drive and 24th Street. The signal could be turned to flashing yellow by July 10, and full activation could occur as soon as July 14. Motorists should be aware that traffic patterns at this intersection will not flow the same as other City traffic signals. The three phases of traffic flow at this interesection will be as follows:
- Westbound 24th Street through traffic and left turns from westbound 24th Street onto southbound 22nd Drive/ storage facilty entrance.
- Westbound and eastbound through traffic on 24th Street.
- Eastbound 24th Street through vehicles and eastbound left turns onto northbound 22nd Drive (if a left-turning vehicle is present).
The overall project includes roadway improvements such as new curb, gutter and sidewalk. It also includes median modifications at 21st Drive, Camino Barranca and the Albertson's driveway. Traffic control will be in place between Camino Alameda and Avenue B, and left turns from 24th Street onto 21st Drive may be restricted at times.
Avenue A widening - Overnight and Weekend Closures Coming
The Avenue A expansion between 16th and 24th streets will face greater lane restrictions in the upcoming weeks. Motorists travelling during overnight hours (midnight to 6 a.m.) should avoid this stretch of Avenue A altogether as complete closures will occur as needed. As work progresses, paving in the intersections with 16th Street and 24th Street will require weekend closures of Avenue A, though no definite time for this work is currently set. Motorists should prepare for this possiblity and use 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south through traffic.
Currently, 16th Street is reduced to one lane in each direction during daytime hours. Motorists who cannot avoid this intersection should leave several minutes earlier than normal to compensate for delays.
One Avenue A during daytime hours, the right northbound lane is closed and the center turn lane used for northbound traffic, so motorists should expect delays behind those waiting to make turns. As pavement has been removed on the east side of the avenue, turns onto and off of side streets will be bumpy and trailing motorists should give the drivers in front of them extra time to complete these turns.
As part of this project, access between 16th Street and 11th Avenue will be cut off north of 16th Street. This will be a permanent traffic control change.
The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. The current plan calls for construction to begin first at the 16th and 24th Street intersections, followed by the widening of the avenue in between. Rough estimate for completion is by Thanksgiving week.
16th Street Pre-Widening
As gas pipeline work continues on the south side of 16th Street between I-8 and Arizona Avenue, motorists should be alert to the possibility of temporary delays. Most work at this point continues off of roadways.
This is work being done in advance of the upcoming improvements to 16th Street. ADOT's 16th Street widening project is going out to bid and construction is epxected to begin this summer.
Carver Park Neighborhood Reconstruction - Magnolia Restricted
Magnolia Avenue will be closed or reduced to one lane at times between 5th Street and 8th Street; use Avenue A or Avenue B for north-south travel between 1st and 8th streets.
The Carver Park neighborhood street replacement and reconstruction project is bounded by the West Main Canal on the north, Avenue A on the east, 8th Street on the south and Magnolia Avenue along the west. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-summer 2009. Current work includes closure of 17th Avenue north of 3rd Street.
32nd Street Water Line Relocation, Pacific to 2-1/2E
The right westbound through traffic lane of 32nd Street has been closed between Pacific Avenue and Avenue 2-1/2E due to the expansion and relocation of an existing water line along 32nd Street. Additional work is expected in the northwest corner of Pacific Avenue and 32nd Street.
The existing pipeline is located in area where ADOT is going to be putting in some new storm retention basins (in front of the Fairgrounds parking lot on ADOT right of way). Most of the work is off of the street. This project is expected to be complete by August.
No ADOT Closures Over Holiday - Yay!
The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced that no road closures on any of its projects will take place between July 3-6.
