Council Must Appoint Replacement by July 31

Yuma, Arizona - The City of Yuma received eight letters of interest from persons wishing to fill the remaining five-plus months remaining on the term of outgoing Councilmember Ross J. Hieb.

Those who submitted letters as of the 9 a.m. Monday, June 29 deadline were:

  • Edward C. Thomas
  • Daniel E. Sauro
  • Elgin L. Everly
  • Mike Shelton
  • Gary Gleason
  • Douglas J. Nicholls
  • Richard W. Donato
  • Geoffrey S. Dewhurst

Citing "family and business priorities," Hieb submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Larry Nelson effective after the July 1, 2009 regularly scheduled meeting of the Yuma City Council.

With his term not expiring until the end of the year, the City is required by Charter to fill his seat through a majority vote of the sitting City Council members within 30 days of the resignation, in this case by July 31. The Council has regularly scheduled meetings before then of July 1 and July 15.

By City Charter, a councilmember must be a resident and a qualified elector (registered to vote) of Yuma, and must have resided within the city for at least one year preceding the term on council.

The City Council will discuss the position during its special worksession, to be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St.

Copies of the letters of interest and resumes may be viewed in the Mayor and Council Office at City Hall, One City Plaza. Any further questions should be directed to City Administrator Mark Watson at (928) 373-5011.
