The first World's Paper Tole Exhibit was held in Sharpsborg, Norway 4 years ago. This will be the first on the North American continent. Why Yuma? Nona Church, President of the Paper Tole Institute explains, "Margie Simpson, my former instructor, was very instrumental in this decision, as she teaches winter classes of 3D art for the City of Yuma. She has a large student base and we felt it would be good for them to be exposed to the international techniques that will be shown at the Exhibit. The exhibitors come to Yuma, Arizona from all over the United States, Spain, Barbados, Norway and Canada."
Exhibition participants may enter up to 10 pictures, but only one per category, with a $35.00 entry fee. There will be a classification for professionals, adults, and youths (6-17). All ability levels will be represented and everyone is encouraged to enter. Awards will be presented for first through fourth places in all 10 categories, along with a Best of Show in each class and a “Peoples Choice” award.
Vendors at the Exhibit will include Geme’ Art from Vancouver, Washington, and Decoupage Supply Center from Sorrento, Florida. Paper Tole prints, kits and supplies will be available for purchase.
The Paper Tole Workshops teach the various techniques used in 3D art-feathering, furring, glazing, adding lights and dried flowers, use of foils, advanced shaping, embossing, marketing, 3D basics, matting and framing, blocking and more.
The Paper Tole Institute (sponsor of the event) requires that persons interested in becoming instructors be able to demonstrate the necessary capabilities and techniques before becoming Certified Paper Tole Instructors. The Institute offers certification on three levels including students, professional artists and instructors. Whether or not you are interested in becoming an instructor, you can learn the techniques purely for the enjoyment and creation of your own 3D pictures.
The workshop for the full week is $300.00. Participants may also choose specific workshops for $35 each ($25 with a City of Yuma Parks & Recreation card). To register for the workshops or to be an exhibitor call, email or write Nona Church, 505-839-0746, nonach@aol.com, 1800 Bluffside Drive NW, Albuquerque, NM 87105.
Paper tole, also known as three-dimensional decoupage, is the art of handcrafting three-dimensional pictures from flat prints. Paper tole art is created by skillfully cutting, shaping, and assembling pieces of paper layered onto an image until a three-dimensional version of the image emerges. Though there are a number of ways to use paper tole, one of the most popular is to frame the image in a deep wall frame and display it as wall art.
Paper Tole had it's beginnings long ago in the French tradition where it was called "Vue de petit o'ptique." The tradition migrated to Canada and the whole world, maintaining a solid folk art history as it evolved into it's current name of 3D Art. The ability to take a two dimensional vision into the three dimensional takes time, patience and a thorough understanding of depth perception and attention to all the details.
