Holiday Cooking Safety

Thanksgiving is just a little more than a week away. This time of year, home cooking is on everyone’s mind and, of course, cooking related fires start to increase. Often the cause is unattended cooking. Something distracts the cook   and cooking food is forgotten until smoke starts to show or an alarm starts to go off. Occasionally people will even leave the home with food cooking on the stove. Sometimes this can just result in a lot of smoke, but it can also lead to badly damaged kitchen or home.

Also, here in Yuma, people often avoid using their ovens during the hot summer months and sometimes the oven is used more for storage than anything else. Be sure to check the interior of your oven (and broilers) before you start doing any baking. Forgotten wood and plastic items have been the source of many oven fires.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
