Yuma, Arizona — The City of Yuma is seeking volunteers for the next Take Pride in Yuma day, 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the vicinity of 24th Street and Kennedy Lane.

Volunteers are asked to help paint the south wall of 24th Street between Kennedy Lane and Pacific Avenue.  The new paint job will make the wall a uniform color, improving upon the patchwork of temporary fixes left by the City’s graffiti abatement program.

You can volunteer by calling (928) 373-5228 to give crews a head count of how many supplies they’ll need to bring.  Or just arrive in the 24th and Kennedy Lane area by 7:30 a.m. Saturday.  Parking is available in Kennedy Park, just north of the meeting site.

All paint and materials will be supplied.  Volunteers will need to dress comfortably in clothes and shoes that they don’t mind getting a little paint on.

The event also marks the debut of the City’s new Graffiti Busters trailer.  The new graffiti trailer serves several functions.  It is a bright, physical presence that creates an elevated profile letting vandals know that the City and the community take graffiti seriously and are on patrol to stop it.  Second, the trailer is made to haul graffiti busting supplies easily and efficiently, saving time and money.

In a span of 12 months during 2007 and 2008 there were 2,305 abated instances of graffiti in Yuma.  This number is triple what it was during the same period in the previous 12 months.  Graffiti abatement cost taxpayers in excess of $100,000 last year.

To participate in future graffiti “Paint Outs” scheduled for Feb 21, 2009 and May16th, 2009, please call the City at 373-5228.

Community sponsors of the graffiti abatement program include Sherwin Williams Paint and Reddy Rents.

Members of the media may contact Public Affairs Coordinator Dave Nash at (928) 373-5015, or (928) 941-0199, or Director of Communications and Public Affairs Greg Hyland, CPM at (928) 373-5023 or (928) 580-4751.
