Yuma, Arizona — Residents interested in supporting a communitywide effort to build a dog park in Yuma are invited to attend the Humane Society of Yuma’s Walk N’ Wag event this coming Saturday to bring their pet, have some lunch and check out the park’s location.
The walk is scheduled to begin at 11a.m. Nov. 15. Volunteers from Yuma Parks and Recreation will be cooking up hot dog and hamburger plates with chips and a soda for $5 beginning at noon. Proceeds from lunch support Yuma’s first dog park. Registration for the $10 walk will go toward the Humane Society’s new shelter.
“We’re thrilled to have the support of the Humane Society of Yuma as we work to make the dog park a reality,” explained Roberta Ukura, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. “The cost to create the dog park is $70,000 and support from the community is vital in helping us reach this goal. We hope to see lots of pups and people at the Walk n’ Wag event and everyone is invited to stop by and pick up lunch served fresh from the grill!”
The three-plus acres for Yuma’s first dog park consist of the basin behind the shopping center at Palo Verde and Pacific Avenue, which is the location of the 2008 Walk n’ Wag event. Parking for the event will be in the lot of Fallas Paredes (formerly Sam’s Club), just across Palo Verde Street from the park.
When completed, Yuma’s dog park will feature grass to run on, trees for shade, water for pets and people as well as benches for two-legged dog lovers to rest on while their four-legged friends frolic. There will be a variety of play apparatus installed that will help pets stay healthy and alert both physically and mentally.
Additionally there are a number of ways the community can support the dog park. For more information on how you can get involved please call Yuma Parks and Recreation at (928) 373-5200.
Sponsors of Yuma’s first Dog Park include the Humane Society of Yuma, The Sun, Desert Veterinary Clinic, Arizona West Veterinary Clinic, 33.10 and C & C Entertainment.
