Yuma, Arizona —  This Thursday, hundreds of area fourth-graders and their teachers will explore ways that our Colorado River surface water and the water beneath us are connected—and why they matter to us.

From 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6th, the Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, 201 N. 4th Avenue, will host  approximately 450 Yuma fourth-graders and 20 teachers from 11 area schools at Yuma’s fourth annual “Make a Splash with Project WET” water festival.

WET stands for “Water Education for Teachers.”  Arizona Project WET, a program of The Water Resources Research Center and Cooperative Extension Services of the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, coordinates water festivals such as this one.

“The hands-on, minds-on lessons will engage students in learning about watersheds, water supply, the water cycle and ways to conserve water,” according to Arizona Project WET literature. “The three interactive science-focused investigations are correlated to state standards and address crucial topics in water stewardship. Facilitators hope instilling water conservation habits and appreciation in children’s lives will lead to a lifelong commitment to water stewardship.”

“The continued financial support of City of Yuma Utilities Department, Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, Yuma County Water Users Association, Carollo Engineering, and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality as well as the equally important in-kind support of the Bureau of Reclamation, Yuma School District 1, Yuma County Cooperative Extension, and Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park make this possible.  Clear Creek Associates have joined them to support the Yuma Water Festival,” said Arizona Project WET literature.

For more information on water festivals, please visit the Arizona Project WET web site or contact Kerry Schwartz, Director Arizona Project WET, Water Resources Research Center, (520) 792-9591, Ext. 22, or kschwart@cals.arizona.edu via e-mail.
