On November 15, 2008 the City of Yuma is putting its new graffiti busting trailer on the road. The new graffiti trailer hits the streets in conjunction with one of four Take Pride in Yuma “Paint Outs” held throughout the year. The November 15th “Paint Out” is from 7:30 am to 11:00 am beginning at Kennedy Memorial Park located at 24th Street and Kennedy Lane. Volunteers are welcome and needed. To get involved and help “Paint Out” graffiti please call 373-5228.
Graffiti is a challenge in cities across the United States and Yuma is no different. In a span of twelve months during 2007 and 2008 there were 2,305 abated instances of graffiti. This number is triple what it was during the same period in the previous twelve months. The cost of graffiti abatement cost taxpayers in excess of $100,000 last year.
Assistant Director of Yuma Parks and Recreation Roberta Ukura explained that, “Graffiti is a problem we tackle on a daily basis. Community members are a critical part of the offense necessary to reduce, and ultimately to eliminate, graffiti. Citizens are urged to call the Yuma Police Department at 782-7463 if they notice anyone in the act of graffiti vandalism or call the Graffiti Hotline at 928-329-2828 if they know of graffiti that needs to be removed.

The new graffiti trailer serves several functions. It is a bright, physical presence that creates an elevated profile letting vandals know that the City and the community take graffiti seriously and are on patrol to stop it. Second, the trailer is made to haul graffiti busting supplies easily and efficiently which saves time and money.
To participate in future graffiti “Paint Outs” scheduled for Feb 21, 2009 and May 16th, 2009 please call the City at 373-5228.
Community sponsors of the graffiti abatement program include Sherwin Williams Paint and Reddy Rents.
