Current Projects

32nd Street Widening Between Avenue A And Avenue B — Update

The contractor working on the 32nd Street project has closed the left-turn lane from westbound 32nd Street to southbound Avenue B.  Left turns are prohibited.  This pattern is likely to continue through Oct. 31 due to groundwater in the area.

Possible detours for southbound Avenue B include using 24th Street to Avenue B to complete a southbound turn, or using southbound Avenue C to reconnect with Avenue B using any of several county streets to the south.

The 32nd Street widening project includes construction of a new roadway to the immediate north of the existing one to expand the total number of traffic lanes, plus a new 20-inch water transmission line from Avenue B to the water tower near Avenue A and a new neighborhood drainage basin for The Dunes.

Main Street Between 2nd And 3rd Streets

From Oct. 23-25, Main Street be closed between 2nd and 3rd streets due to crane work placing new structural supports on the Kress Building.   The usual “block party” detours — Maiden Lane or Madison Avenue to 1st Street or Giss Parkway — apply.

Avenue A Widening

Work crews will be relocating various facilities along the west side of Avenue A in preparation for the widening project.

The sidewalk will be closed on various sections of the west side of Avenue A between 19th and 24th streets.  Passing motorists should use extra caution when passing work zones.  Work is expected to last through Nov. 14.

14th Avenue South Of 16th Street

Beginning Oct. 20, Southwest Gas will replace gas mains and services in several alleys in the general area between 14th Avenue and Avenue A, and between 16th and 19th Streets.  This work will involve the temporary closure of 14th Avenue between 16th Street and 16th Place.  Work will take approximately 14 days at each location and is expected to be completed by Dec. 31.

24th Street Widening Between Avenue 6E And Avenue 9E

The vicinity of 24th Street and Avenue 9E will have narrowed lanes through Nov. 8 as this road widening project continues.  Motorists are advised to watch for changing traffic patterns in this area each of the next several weeks.

Slowdowns and turn restrictions remain likely along all of 24th Street in this area as a result of this major road widening and construction project.  Police patrol this area to ensure compliance with work zone speed limits and turns.  The road is expected to open to full traffic in November, while overall project completion is currently slated for mid-December.

5th Street Between 14th And 15th Avenues

5th Street will be closed between 14th and 15th avenues through Nov. 14 for installation of water and sewer service, plus additional driveway work.  Detour on 4th Street using 15th Avenue and 13th Avenue.  Access to Carver School parking should not be affected.

Villa Hermosa Water Line And Street Reconstruction

The Villa Hermosa Subdivision No. 2 street reconstruction project in the area bounded by Avenue B, 22nd Street, Thacker Canal and 20th Street is currently on schedule for an anticipated completion in November.

Southwest Gas Projects

Southwest Gas will be working on a 4-inch pressure main in the area of Avenue 4E from north of City 28th Street to County 14th Street.  Sections of the project will reduce County 12th Street and later County 14th Street to one lane of traffic, assisted by flagmen, west of Avenue 4E.  Traffic control plans indicate the work will be completed by October 30th.

Additional Southwest Gas projects are planned for 5th Avenue at 12th Street, 8th Street and Avenue B and 14th Avenue north of 1st Street.

Upcoming Projects

Avenue 3E Widening Between I-8 And 32nd Street

Plans currently being finalized call for Avenue 3E to expand to 5 lanes of traffic between 24th Street and 32nd Street (phase 1) and 7 lanes of traffic north of 24th Street (phase 2).  Timetable for construction at present appears to be spring 2009.

As this is a multi-jurisdictional project, plans need to be reviewed and approved by other agencies, such as Arizona Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and Union Pacific Railroad.

16th Street Widening Between Arizona And Yuma Palms Parkway

This project will include widening 16th Street east from Arizona Avenue to Yuma Palms Parkway, including the Interstate 8 interchange and bridges over I-8 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.  This project will also include improvements to traffic signals, including the one at 16th Street and Arizona Avenue.  A multi-jurisdictional project, it is hoped that design phase will be complete in 2008, with construction to start in 2009.
