YUMA, Ariz. – The City Code prohibiting the use of portable communication devices while driving went into effect Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015. During the first 30 days after the ordinance was approved by the Yuma City Council, the Yuma Police Department did not issue any tickets for the offence, only verbal warnings.
Between Dec. 9, 2015 and Jan. 9, 2016, the Yuma Police Department made 146 traffic stops in reference to this violation. These are only the stops that were recorded. YPD's traffic division stated they gave many verbal warnings without initiating a traffic stop, in an effort to educate the public.
From Jan. 9, 2016 to Feb. 9, 2016, police will be giving out written warnings regarding this violation, unless the incident is accident-related. If accident-related, a citation will be issued for this violation. Beginning on Feb. 9, 2016 the transition period will end and citations will be issued for the violation.
Please drive safely and hands-free.
