Yuma Mayor invites all to 3rd Annual Binational Bicycle Ride set for Saturday, Oct. 20

YUMA, Ariz. – Yuma Mayor Douglas J. Nicholls invites all community members and visitors to the Third Annual Binational Bicycle Ride the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018.

The event begins with a 7 a.m. registration at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive. Mayors and elected officials will be delivering short speeches at the start before leading the ride at 8 a.m. toward Somerton, Gadsden, San Luis and into San Luis Rio Colorado (SLRC), Sonora, Mexico. The ride will finish with a celebration at Parque Benito Juarez, where the City of SLRC will have 250 medals for finishers. Local vendors will be selling food for purchase, and there will be live music and entertainment.

Participants may pre-register online here, or register in person. There is no cost to participate.

Participants are reminded to bring proper documentation to cross the border if they choose to do so, and to coordinate transportation back to the Civic Center, where they may park their vehicles. The Yuma County Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority (YCIPTA) will be assisting with providing some public transportation from San Luis, Ariz., to the Yuma Civic Center.

"Everyone is encouraged to join us in this upcoming ride, which unites us with our regional neighbors in a healthy, fun activity," said Mayor of Yuma Douglas Nicholls. "You'll have the unique opportunity to see our 4FrontED megaregion from an entirely new perspective and to learn more about communities south of the City of Yuma that are key partners in our growth."

The route is approximately 21 miles long. Last year, nearly 200 people participated from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The ride is open to all ages, but participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The event coordination is a joint effort between Yuma County, the Town of Wellton, and the cities of Yuma, Somerton, San Luis and San Luis Rio Colorado. Public safety officials from multiple agencies will assist in traffic control and safety. It is made possible through the sponsorship of community businesses and organizations like D & H Electric.

“The Mayors Annual Binational Bicycle Ride is a perfect example of the goodness that can happen when we all work together, get to know each other and establish friendly relationships between cities and towns," said Wellton Mayor Cecilia McCollough. “What I truly love about the Mayors’ Binational Bicycle Ride is how it brings together leaders and community members from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border in a way that is healthy, active and fun—and allows us to create a sense of civic pride in the gorgeous border region we all share. Everyone is welcome, and there’s such diversity in the ride: from the start in Yuma, to riding alongside agricultural fields, to arriving in culturally-rich San Luis Río Colorado.”

T-shirts for the event will be available for free for the first 150 participants to arrive at the Yuma Civic Center on Saturday, Oct. 20.
