Road Report summary

A weekly list of City projects or encroachment permits authorized by the City of Yuma affecting busy streets.

16th Street, I-8 to mall

Southwest Gas has a 90-day project to replace 565 linear feet of a 6-inch gas transmission line requiring a series of lane closures on 16th Street between Interstate 8 and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. Only one lane of 16th Street will be closed in one direction at a time, with phases including westbound lane closures happening separately from phases with eastbound closures. Project is expected to complete by the end of the year.

 

Southgate Mall area

Reconstruction of Southgate Mall property will lead to a number of lane closures and detours in Big Curve/Southgate Mall area over the next several months. Southbound 4th Avenue's right lane will close from Catalina Drive to 4th Avenue Extension, for construction of new turn lane and driveway entrance into Southgate Mall. Then 4th Avenue Extension will be closed between Business Loop 8/4th Avenue and 32nd Street. At one point in the project, the 32nd Street intersection with 4th Avenue Extension will become a 4-way stop. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and to watch for and follow detour signs posted in the project vicinity. The project is slated to be completed by the end of the year.

Update: The traffic signal near the intersection of 4th Avenue and Business 8 will be shut down for for rewiring. Access to the Big Curve area and to 4th Avenue Extension will be closed off. Posted signs will direct traffic to adjacent intersections for business access. Work on this traffic signal is slated to be completed by the end of September.

 

24th Street, Avenues C to D

24th Street is closed between Avenue C and 42nd Drive for sewer lateral work. Neighborhood traffic can exit the subdivision using 45th Way and taking 24th Street west to Avenue D. 24th Street is slated to open to through-traffic by early October. Through-traffic detour is 32nd Street. 

 

Arizona Avenue, 26th Pl.-25th St.

Crews will be installing fiber optic cable along Arizona Avenue, from 26th Place to 25th Street, leading to reduced lanes and a slowed speed limit in both directions near the work zone. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be directed to keep right. The project is scheduled to be completed in late December.

 

24th Street near Olivia Avenue

Century Link will be placing fiber for a new cell site, requiring crews to dig to expose a manhole along 24th Street near Olivia Avenue. An eastbound lane on 24th Street will be closed between Mary Avenue and Pacific Avenue. Additionally, a reduced speed limit will be in place near that area. Drivers entering 24th Street from Olivia Avenue will only be able to make a right turn onto 24th Street. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.

 

Avenue A, 24th Street

Crews will be digging a trench to place new cable for Yuma Regional Medical Center, which is located on the southwest corner of the Avenue A and 24th Street intersection. This five-day project will take place just east of the hospital's parking garage. Traffic along Avenue A will have a reduced speed limit in place and a lane closure near the work area. The project is to be completed by the end of November. 

 

Avenue B, 16th Street

A five-day project to place new fiber for a bank branch located off of the Avenue B and 16th Street intersection is scheduled to take place by the end of November. This will lead to a lane closure and reduced speed limit for westbound traffic on 16th Street near its intersection with Avenue B. Additionally, traffic headed south along Avenue B will have a reduced speed limit and lane closure near the intersection.

 

Kennedy Lane, 24th Street

Century Link will be placing new fiber at a location off of 24th Street near Kennedy Lane. The five-day project is scheduled to take place sometime before the end of November and will lead to sidewalk and alley closures near the intersection of Kennedy Lane and 24th Street. Additionally, a portion of Kennedy Lane will close to through traffic near its intersection with 24th Street during the project. Signs will be posted to alert eastbound traffic on 24th Street of a lane closure and reduced 25 mph speed limit.

 

24th Street, Ridgeview Drive

Crews will be installing new fiber service to the Yuma Regional Medical Center's Cancer Center, requiring a slowed speed limit along 24th Street, near Avenue A and Ridgeview Drive. The project is scheduled to be completed by November. There is a time restriction in place between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

Maiden Lane - downtown

The demolition and refurbishment of the Yuma County building located at 197 S. Main Street is under way over the early autumn months, leading to several road and sidewalk closures in the area throughout the duration of the project. Maiden Lane is closed from 1st to 2nd Street. Some of the downtown parking spaces immediately to the east are also closed. Access to downtown parking east of Main Street should be via Gila Street. Signs are posted to direct drivers to closures and detours. 

 

Avenue B at 8th Street

A private project to install utility connections and patch roadways for the incoming Walmart Neighborhood Market will require lane closures in the area of 8th Street and Avenue B. One phase will reduce Avenue B to one lane of traffic in each direction through the 8th Street intersection. Another phase will reduce 8th Street to one lane in each direction just west of Avenue B. Motorists are advised to observe traffic control devices and reduced speed limits. Alternate routes are encouraged. Overall project could take up to two months. 

 

8th Street, Clifford Way 

A one-day project to tie in a new gas service at a residence on 8th Street near Clifford Way will lead to a sidewalk closure and a partial road closure along 8th Street, with a reduced speed limit in place. The project is to be completed in one day, sometime before the end of October. When crews at work, signs will be posted in the area to alert drivers to the reduced speed limit.

 

West Palmcroft Drive

A driveway construction project at Palmcroft Elementary School will lead to a road closure near the school. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the work zone. Work is slated to be completed by the end of October.

 

Virginia Drive area - Southwest Gas

Southwest Gas has a series of one-day projects to abandon a gas line, including at 27th Street and Virginia Drive, and 25th Street between Virginia Drive and 1st Avenue. Traffic going in either direction along Virginia Drive will be directed to keep right near the work zone. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

 

City Street Maintenance

Asphalt maintenance crews will conduct operations Sept. 28-Oct. 2 at the following locations: 

  • Rancho Verde subdivision (crack seal)
  • 16th Street from Avenue B to Avenue C crack seal)
  • Avenue C from 25th Place to 32nd Street (crack seal)
  • 20th Street from 45th Avenue to Avenue B (crack seal)
  • Cielo Verde subdivision (crack seal)
  • Falls Ranch 3 and 4 (grinding)
  • 30th Street, 21st Drive to 18th Avenue (roadway sealing)

Please be advised that lane restrictions, detours and road closures may be in effect during these projects.
