City of Yuma Road Report, Nov. 13

A weekly list of City projects or encroachment permits authorized by the City of Yuma affecting busy streets.

16th Street, Pacific Ave.

Crews will be grading and paving concrete on 16th Street near its intersection with Pacific Avenue, leading to a lane closure and reduced speed limit in the area. A portion of south Sunridge Drive will be closed to through traffic while the project is underway. The project also includes the installation of a traffic signal to the Gomez Plaza. Signs will be posted along 16th Street to alert drivers of detours and road closures in the area. Work is to be completed by the end of November.

Avenue 3E, MCAS north gate

A project to remove existing overhead and an underground conductor across Avenue 3E near the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma north gate will require lane closures long 3E, a sidewalk closure at its intersection with the MCAS north gate entrance, and reduced speed limits in the work area. The project is to take place before Nov. 30, and is scheduled to last a total of no more than five days. Signs will be posted along Avenue 3E to alert drivers of the reduced speed limit and sidewalk/lane closures.

Avenue B, 8th Street

A contractor will be installing utilities and patching the road near the new Walmart Neighborhood Market located near the intersection of Avenue B and 8th Street, leading to a partial lane closure and a sidewalk closure on Avenue B. The two-day project is expected to take place before mid-December. Traffic on Avenue B will have reduced speed limits in place near the work zone, with signs posted to alert drivers as they approach the area. Additionally, a pole will need to be replaced for the project, leading to a lane closure along 8th Street sometime before Nov. 30.

16th Street, I-8 to mall

Southwest Gas has a 90-day project to replace 565 linear feet of a 6-inch gas transmission line requiring a series of lane closures on 16th Street between Interstate 8 and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. Only one lane of 16th Street will be closed in one direction at a time, with phases including westbound lane closures happening separately from phases with eastbound closures. Project is expected to complete by the end of the year.

24th St., Pacific Ave.-Kennedy Ln.

Crews will be digging along 24th Street between Pacific Avenue and Kennedy Lane to place fiber for a new cellular site. Work is scheduled to take place before Nov. 15, and will take a total of five days to complete. The project will lead to the closure of a lane on 24th Street, reduced speed limits, and sidewalk closures on Olivia Avenue and Mary Avenue. Signs will be posted near the area to alert traffic. 

8th Street,12th-14th avenues

A project to install a new fireline for a restaurant located off of 8th Street, between 12th Avenue and 14th Avenue, will lead to several road closures and detours in the area. The total work duration to install the fireline is 10 days. It is scheduled to finish by mid-November. While traffic control is in place, traffic will not be able to turn onto 13th Avenue from 8th Street as that avenue will be closed. Traffic is to use 12th Avenue or 14th Avenue instead. There will also be a sidewalk and partial 8th Street lane closure at its intersection with 13th Avenue. The speed limit near the work zone will be reduced to 25 mph.

Southgate Mall area

Reconstruction of Southgate Mall property will lead to a number of lane closures and detours in Big Curve/Southgate Mall area over the next several months. Southbound 4th Avenue's right lane will close from Catalina Drive to 4th Avenue Extension, for construction of new turn lane and driveway entrance into Southgate Mall. Then 4th Avenue Extension will be closed between Business Loop 8/4th Avenue and 32nd Street. At one point in the project, the 32nd Street intersection with 4th Avenue Extension will become a 4-way stop. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and to watch for and follow detour signs posted in the project vicinity. The project is slated to be completed by the end of the year.

Arizona Ave., 26th Pl.-25th St.

Crews will be installing fiber optic cable along Arizona Avenue, from 26th Place to 25th Street, leading to reduced lanes and a slowed speed limit in both directions near the work zone. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be directed to keep right. The project is scheduled to be completed in late December.

Avenue A, 24th Street

Crews will be digging a trench to place new cable for Yuma Regional Medical Center, which is located on the southwest corner of the Avenue A and 24th Street intersection. This five-day project will take place just east of the hospital's parking garage. Traffic along Avenue A will have a reduced speed limit in place and a lane closure near the work area. The project is to be completed by the end of November. 

Maiden Lane - downtown

The demolition and refurbishment of the Yuma County building located at 197 S. Main Street is under way over the early autumn months, leading to several road and sidewalk closures in the area throughout the duration of the project. Maiden Lane is closed from 1st to 2nd Street. Some of the downtown parking spaces immediately to the east are also closed. Access to downtown parking east of Main Street should be via Gila Street. Signs are posted to direct drivers to closures and detours.

 

City Street Maintenance

Asphalt maintenance crews will conduct operations Nov. 16-20 at the following locations: 

  • Belleza Unit 1 subdivision (fog seal)
  • Tillman Estates (fog seal)
  • Cielo Verde 1, 2 and 3 (fog seal)
  • Vista del Sol (crack seal)
