16th St., 4th Ave.
Construction for the 16th Street and 4th Avenue intersection improvements project is under way. Following is the latest update:
Eastbound traffic on 16th Street from approximately 8th Avenue to just west of 1st Avenue will be restricted to one lane. Westbound traffic will be restricted to one lane from 4th Avenue to 8th Avenue for water system work. Left turns are restricted from eastbound 16th Street to northbound avenues (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th); however, left turns are permitted at this time at 16th Street and 4th Avenue. Fifth Avenue will be closed between 16th Street and 17th Street, and currently 6th Avenue is also closed from 16th Street to 17th Street.
16th Street will be closed midnight to 4 a.m. Friday, June 3, from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue. Overnight shift workers should be alert to this closure; employers are asked to nofitfy their employees.
Impacts to 4th Avenue could begin after Memorial Day, as asphalt removal on the east side of the street is due to begin.
The overall project zone includes 4th Avenue between 15th Street and 17th Street, and 16th Street between 2nd Avenue and 6th Avenue. Improvements will consist of dual left-turn lanes and dedicated right-turn lanes at all four legs of the intersection and bike lanes as identified within the transportation element of the voter-approved General Plan. The project also includes waterline replacement and water system infrastructure upgrades.
The City asks all motorists to be aware of this project and to begin planning ahead. This means leaving earlier, and/or picking an alternate route away from the construction zone, such as 24th Street, 8th Street or 32nd Street for east-west through traffic, and Arizona Avenue, Avenue A , Pacific Avenue or Avenue B for north-south through traffic. Motorists using neighborhood streets are expected to respect and obey the 25 mph residential speed limits and school zones in the area. Access to businesses in the immediate vicinity will be maintained at all times.
Pecan Grove/ 3rd Street
Work could begin as soon as May 31 on the next phase of the Pecan Grove neighborhood waterline replacement project. 3rd Street will be closed between 19th Avenue and 24th Avenue. Following that, work will take place south on 24th Avenue to 5th Street, and various side streets between 24th Avenue and Avenue B. Project is expected to continue into early autumn.
U.S. 95 at Fortuna Wash - ADOT
Work is under way on the $9.3 million bridge on U.S. Highway 95 spanning Fortuna Wash northeast of Yuma and is expected to be completed by next winter. The bridge, partially funded through a $3.2 million federal grant ADOT received in 2011, is going in at milepost 34, approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma and 10 miles south of the turnoff (Imperial Dam Road) to Yuma Proving Ground. Crews are scheduled to work on the Fortuna Wash bridge project during weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Initial work will include setting up a temporary detour road and tree removals, while actual bridge construction is expected to begin in March. Motorists should allow extra travel time as lane restrictions will be in place and flaggers will occasionally need to alternate traffic through the work zone.
