I-8 overnight closure Sunday - ADOT
Motorists should expect overnight lane and ramp closures on Interstate 8 in Yuma beginning Sunday, April 15, while an overhead utility line is installed.
Drivers will need to allow extra time and use detours while the following restrictions are in place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly beginning the night of Sunday, April 15, and continuing through the morning of Thursday, April 19.
Note: All lane and ramp closures will be lifted during daytime hours.
The following restrictions are scheduled:
- East and westbound I-8 will be closed between 16th street (US 95) and Avenue 3E.
- Drivers traveling eastbound on I-8 must exit the freeway at the 16th Street (US 95) off-ramp to access local streets or follow the detour to continue traveling eastbound.
- Drivers traveling westbound on I-8 must exit the freeway on the Avenue 3E off-ramp to access local streets or follow the detour to continue traveling westbound.
Crews from Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) are scheduled to install an overhead power line during the overnight hours. Drivers should slow down, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices, and use caution around utility personnel and equipment.
I-8, Araby Road - ADOT (updated)
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has started the second phase of work in Yuma to convert the Araby Road interchange at Interstate-8 to modern roundabouts. After a five-month break to accommodate winter agriculture traffic, utility work commenced Monday, Mar. 26, on the south side of I-8. The actual construction of a new roundabout is set to begin in May 2018. The roundabout, which is scheduled for completion by November, will connect the eastbound I-8 ramps, Araby Road and Gila Ridge Road.
Araby Road, also known as State Route 195, connects I-8 and the San Luis Port of Entry and is a vital corridor for international commerce. The interchange is one of the busiest intersections along I-8 in Yuma, used by about 22,000 vehicles per day. The new design is expected to accommodate increasing traffic in the area through at least 2035.
Castle Dome Avenue, 8th to 16th streets
The City of Yuma's Public Works crews will be applying a fog seal along Castle Dome Avenue, between 8th and 16th streets during the week of April 16-20. This section of roadway is near the vicinity of several businesses on the north side of the Yuma Palms Mall. Crews are making additional efforts to send notifications to retailers and hotels in the area to spread awareness of the upcoming work. Any questions can be directed to (928) 373-4604.
4th Avenue and 26th Street
Beginning as early as April 19, crews will need to access manholes at various locations near 4th Avenue and 26th Street, requiring a lane closure in the area. Work is to occur only during night hours and weekends. Signs will be placed to alert traffic to the lane shifts and closures so that they can continue with caution. Drivers are asked to please obey all traffic control devices and posted speed limits. The work will finish by May 4.
3rd Avenue, 8th to 11th streets
Crews are working on the first phase of improvements to 3rd Avenue, requiring a closure along the roadway between 8th and 11th streets. No through traffic will be permitted. *Please note that access to local businesses in the area will be maintained.
Avenue B, 8th to 16th streets
Coming soon: Starting as early as May 21, crews will be replacing a vintage streel main line requiring a lane closure on Avenue B, from 8th St. to 16th St. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of the upcoming closure as they approach the workzone.
24th St., Arizona Ave.
Beginning as early as March 21, crews will be working near the intersection of 24th Street and Arizona Avenue for a project totaling no more than 60 days. The work will require a lane closure along 24th Street near its intersection with Arizona Avenue and will call for the speed limit to be reduced to 25 mph in the workzone.
Arizona Avenue, 20th-22nd streets
Crews will be placing aerial cables and conducting a variety of related work at a location near Arizona Avenue, between 20th and 22nd streets. The project will require a road closure on 20th Street, between Arizona Avenue and Walnut Avenue. Work is anticipated to take place between Feb. 25 and Apr. 25. Traffic may detour through either Arizona or Walnut avenues, and then take 19th Street instead of 20th Street.
24th St., Avenue B
Crews will be doing overhead utility work near the southwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue B to replace a Spectrum (Time Warner Cable) fiber optic enclosure. Work is to take place between midnight and 6 a.m., and is to be completed by the June 1. Some lane closures may be in place as needed for the project.
I-8 west of 4th Ave. - Caltrans (updated)
Caltrans crews continue to work on the reconstruction of Interstate-8 in Imperial County, west of Yuma. Recently, crews reduced traffic to a single lane on westbound I-8 between Sidewinder Road and about a mile west of Ogilby Road. Both travel directions have been switched to the I-8 eastbound lanes divided by k-rail. In addition, the westbound on- and off-ramps at Ogilby Road (exit 159) are closed to traffic. Signs have been placed to alert motorists to the ramp closures and to alternate routes.
The I-8 Corridor is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 on three of the five segments. Work will be completed by 2019.
4th Avenue gateway - ADOT
ADOT is making improvements to the state facility at 4th Avenue and 1st Street. Lane restrictions are in place. The $773,000 improvement project will last approximately seven months. ADOT will add a right-turn lane and a 10-ft. wide, colored-concrete shared-use path from 1st Avenue along the east side of 4th Avenue to the existing Yuma Canal Bridge. The project also includes upgrading and refurnishing existing lighting, installing signage, landscaping and rehabilitating the Yuma Crossing concrete historic land marker.
