City of Yuma Road Report, week of May 1-5

A list of work affecting major local city streets.

16th Street and 4th Avenue

Latest update: Additional lanes of traffic are starting to open at the site of this now year-long project. The week of May 1, median work on street lights and poles will take place in the center lanes, so the inside lanes will be closed through the work zone.  Work at individual manhole sites throughout the project zone will necessitate isolated, single-day lane restrictions. Sidewalk work will continue off the roadways. Turn lane work will take place on westbound 16th Street between Maple Avenue and 1st Avenue. Crews will return next month to apply thermoplastic lane striping.

I-8, Giss Parkway - ADOT

The westbound off and on ramps at I-8 and Giss Parkway are closed through mid-June. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will maintain two-way traffic on Giss Parkway and access to businesses in the work zone.

This is part of an ADOT project to improve the interchange area of westbound Interstate 8 and Giss Parkway is underway, and will take approximately seven months to complete. The $1.8 million project will consist of the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the interchange to accommodate commercial trucks and other large vehicles. Work will also improve drainage, intersection lighting, signage and lane striping. Drivers will be asked to use alternate routes, including the 16th Street exit. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced. Drivers should watch for construction personnel and equipment, and obey all posted speed limits and signs.

Avenue 3E, 40th Street

A trenching and manhole installation project near Avenue 3E and 40th Street will require the lane closure of Avenue 3E's northbound lane in the area. The lane closure will be in place for 30 days, from April 15 to May 15. Access to businesses in the area will be maintained. The Marine Corps Air Station Yuma main gate will be closed for the duration of the project.

1st Avenue, 24th - 26th streets

Beginning as early as March 6, crews will begin a project to relocate a waterline along 1st Avenue and Madison Avenue, between 24th and 26th streets. Additionally, they will be replacing pavement along 1st Avenue and replacing four sewer manholes in that area. Work is scheduled to be complete by July 4.

18th St., 4th-6th avenues

A project to install a bond wire on 18th Street between 4th and 6th avenues will require a road closure. Work will take a total of one day, and will be scheduled sometime before May 27. During the one-day project, there will be a partial closure of 18th Street. Additionally, 5th Avenue will be closed to through traffic between 17th and 18th Street. Detours include 4th and 6th avenues.

Drivers will not be permitted to use the nearby alleyways that are located between 4th and 5th avenues and between 5th and 6th avenues as a detour.

Magnolia Ave., 3rd St. - Colorado St.

A partial closure along Magnolia Avenue will be needed for shoulder work along the roadway from 3rd Street to Colorado Street, and then east to 9th Avenue, as crews access a manhole to pull a fiber cable through an existing conduit. Work is to be completed by May 26. Traffic control signs will be posted in the work zones as crews move throughout the area. Additionally, there will be no parking permitted along some sidewalks near the work zone while crews are in the area.

Araby Road, I-8 waterline relocation

A project to relocate a waterline on Araby Road near its intersection with Interstate 8 is under way with estimated completion in June. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible. This work precedes a series of roundabout installations ADOT has planned for this vicinity.

8th Street, Castle Dome - Pacific

8th Street is closed between Castle Dome and Pacific Avenue. Pacific Avenue is closed to through traffic north of 12th Street, and closed to all traffic north of 8th Street. Roadway, water and sewer work is being done in conjunction with the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. Detour by using 12th Street between Pacific and Castle Dome Avenue. The project is anticipated to be complete in late summer.

Avenue 3E/US 95

A nine-month project to widen and improve both US 95 and Avenue 3E is currently under way.  Highway 95 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Avenue 3E to Araby Road (a stretch of approximately 3.5 miles) as part of the construction for this project. The speed limit in the area will be reduced to 25 mph. Drivers will not be permitted to turn left throughout the work area, in neither westbound nor eastbound directions. This portion of work is to be completed by the end of April. The $3.2 million project will widen both roads to five lanes and to include a turn lane. Work will take place on Avenue 3E from north of the Interstate-8 interchange to past the US 95 intersection, as well as on U.S. 95 from about 500 feet west of the Avenue 3E intersection to just past the Araby Road intersection. Both roads are expected to remain open with lane restrictions in place while the project is underway. Drivers are asked to find alternate routes to avoid potential delays. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will maintain access to businesses in the work zone and keep both roadways open during construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by August 2017.

U.S. 95 at Fortuna Wash - ADOT

Work is under way on the bridge on U.S. Highway 95 spanning Fortuna Wash northeast of Yuma and is expected to be completed by next winter. The bridge is going in at milepost 34, approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma and 10 miles south of the turnoff (Imperial Dam Road) to Yuma Proving Ground. Crews are scheduled to work weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Motorists should allow extra travel time as lane restrictions will be in place and flaggers will occasionally need to alternate traffic through the work zone.

20th Street, Arizona to Walnut avenues

As part of a project to replace a steel main line near the northwest corner of Arizona Avenue and 20th Street, additional traffic control will be in place. This includes a lane shift for southbound traffic approaching the intersection along Arizona Avenue, and a separate full closure of Arizona Avenue when necessary. Additionally, 20th Street will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Walnut Avenue to all traffic for a portion of the project. The project is expected finish by mid-May.

I-8 west of 4th Ave. - Caltrans (updated)

Caltrans crews continue to work on the reconstruction of Interstate-8 in Imperial County, west of Yuma. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction from the agricultural checkpoint in California to the state line with Arizona. The westbound off-ramp and on-ramp at 4th Avenue are closed with detour and signage in place to direct traffic to use Winterhaven Drive. The eastbound off- and on-ramp at SR-186/Algodones Road have reopened. The eastbound off- and on-ramps at Winterhaven Drive are closed, with detour and signage in place to use 4th Avenue. Over-sized vehicles and farm vehicles wider than 12 feet are prohibited from traveling westbound on I-8 between Stateline Road and the Winterhaven Drive/4th Avenue; those vehicles should exit at Giss Parkway. Detours are in place and ongoing through 2017.

Upcoming: Slurry Seal, 24th St., Ave. B

The last portion of the Spring Slurry Seal project will require a hard closure at the intersection of 24th Street and Avenue B on Sat., May 13. The intersection will be completely closed to through traffic in all directions. Crews will apply the slurry seal mixture between the hours of 4 a.m. and noon on that day, and should finish by the same evening. Drivers will be asked to detour using nearby roadways while the project is underway. Drivers may use avenues A and C, as alternative routes to Avenue B, to get to and from the north and south ends of town. Traffic traveling eastbound in the intersection's area may detour using 31st Avenue, following the detour signs to be put in place. Westbound traffic may detour through 21st and/or 22nd drives. City crews will post road signs prior to the project's initiation. Access to local businesses will be maintained through alternative routes.
