A weekly list of City projects or encroachment permits authorized by the Ciy of Yuma, affecting busy streets.
16th Street and 4th Avenue
Construction for the 16th Street and 4th Avenue intersection improvements project is under way. The following is the latest update: Curbside removal work continues along westbound 16th Street, which will reduce traffic along 16th Street to one lane in each direction. Left turns may be restricted from 16th Street during certain phases of work. Northbound 4th Avenue will also experience lane restrictions this week to accommodate water and sewer line work. Right turn restrictions remain in place for large trucks and semitrailers.
The City asks all motorists to be aware of this project and to begin planning ahead. This means leaving earlier, and/or choosing an alternate route away from the construction zone, such as 24th Street, 8th Street or 32nd Street for east-west through traffic, and Arizona Avenue, Avenue A, Pacific Avenue or Avenue B for north-south through traffic. Motorists using neighborhood streets are expected to respect and obey the 25 mph residential speed limits and school zones in the area. Access to businesses in the immediate vicinity will be maintained at all times.
40th St., Avenue 4E
The intersection of 40th Street and Avenue 4E is closed to all traffic. Crews are working on a gas pipeline in the area and staging a temporary gas supply to support hydrostatic testing of an irrigation line. Traffic is asked to detour using 32nd Street and either Avenue 3E or Avenue 5E. The project is expected to be completed by mid August.
Avenue 3E, 32nd Street
A road maintenance project will require a lane closure and reduced speed limit along 32nd Street near its intersection with Avenue 3E, from Jul. 11 to Jul. 14. The "crack seal" road maintenance work will be performed during night hours in preparation for a slurry seal project. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of traffic changes as they approach the work zone.
20th Place near 4th Avenue
There will be a lane closure on a portion of 20th Place, 4th to 5th avenues, as crews cut asphalt for plumbing and water tapping. The work is to take place before July 15. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of detours near the road closure as they approach the area. In addition, "no right turn" and "no left turn" signs will be placed where necessary to help with the flow of traffic.
County 19th St., Ave. A - 4th Ave.
A 30-day project to install a new high-pressure gas main line will lead to a reduced speed limit and shoulder work along County 19th Street, between Avenue A and 4th Avenue. Signs will be posted to alert drivers to the reduced speed limit and traffic changes near the work zone. The project is slated to begin as early as Jul. 5.
24th Street, 4th Ave. to Pacific Ave.
Crews will be conducting repairs to a telephone cable located along 24th Street, between 4th Avenue and Pacific Avenue, beginning as early as Jun. 28 and finishing by Jul. 15. The work will lead to a lane closure on the south side of 24th Street from 4th Avenue to Pacific Avenue and will also require some sidewalk closures. Traffic will still be able to turn onto cross streets along 24th Street, but will be asked to keep left due to a lane closure. Additionally, the speed limit along the roadway will be reduced to 25 miles per hour.
U.S. 95 at Fortuna Wash - ADOT
Work is under way on the $9.3 million bridge on U.S. Highway 95 spanning Fortuna Wash northeast of Yuma and is expected to be completed by next winter. The bridge, partially funded through a $3.2 million federal grant ADOT received in 2011, is going in at milepost 34, approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma and 10 miles south of the turnoff (Imperial Dam Road) to Yuma Proving Ground. Crews are scheduled to work on the Fortuna Wash bridge project during weekdays between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Initial work will include setting up a temporary detour road and tree removals, while actual bridge construction is expected to begin in March. Motorists should allow extra travel time as lane restrictions will be in place and flaggers will occasionally need to alternate traffic through the work zone.
West Main Canal, Avenue B - 1st Street
Update: The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is administering a project to construct a paved pathway, lighting and rest stops along the West Main Canal. The project will require the closure of the canal banks until this fall. Crews will be working along the north bank of the canal between First and Third streets, from Avenue A to Avenue B.
