Elected in the September 2001 Primary Election with over 60% of the ballots cast, and he was re-elected in 2006 in the Primary Election with over 60% of the votes.
Mayor Nelson’s four year term runs through December 2009.
Being very civic minded, he has served on many non-profit and volunteer boards. Most recently as the Co-founder and Secretary/Treasurer of Amberly’s Place.
In addition to his mayoral duties, Mayor Nelson is a member of these organizations: Council Executive Board Member – Boy Scouts of America and received the Distinguished Eagle Award, Yuma Rotary, Co-founder of Greater Yuma Economic Development Corporation (GYEDC) where he is on the Board of Directors and the Executive Board, Executive Board Member of the Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization, Co-founder and Board Member of Yuma Leadership, Caballeros de Yuma, and numerous leadership positions with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Mayor Nelson is also a member of the Arizona League of Cities & Towns Executive Board and Resolutions Committee; Steering Committee Member of the National League of Cities (NLC) Finance, Administration, and Intergovernmental Relations (FAIR) Committee; Member of the United States Conference of Mayors, where he is co-Chairman of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Task Force and the Community/Military Relations Task Force; Arizona/Mexico Commission, Border Trade Alliance (BTA); the Arizona Military Affairs Committee, appointed by the Arizona State Legislature; and the Yuma County Investment Board of the Yuma Private Industry Council.
Larry Nelson, an electrical engineer, retired from Arizona Public Service (APS) with 42 years of dedicated service. His last position with APS was as the South West Division Manager in Yuma, Arizona.
When not representing Yuma, he and his wife Shirley, of over 50 years, enjoy family activities with their children and grandchildren.
