Municipal Court misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations and all criminal and civil matters related to City ordinances. The Court also issues civil orders including orders of protection and injunctions against harassment.

Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction created by the Charter of the City of Yuma and organized according to the statues of the State of Arizona.

The Court misdemeanor criminal cases (including domestic violence cases), traffic violations and all criminal and civil matters related to City ordinances. The Court issues civil orders including orders of protection and injunctions against harassment. Court security officers provide security for the Court, serve summons and subpoenas, transport prisoners to and from the Court as necessary and assist with video court.

Current Municipal Court Judges

The current Municipal Court judges are:

Hon. Douglas S. Stanley, Presiding Judge
Elected to serve a term beginning January 1, 2010 and ending December 31, 2013.
Hon. Nancy Acuna Davis, Judge
Elected to serve a term beginning January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2011.

Presiding Judge

The chief officer of the Municipal Court is the Presiding Judge. The Municipal Court Judges are elected by the voters of the City of Yuma. Commencing with the elections held in 1973, biennial elections are held every four years and the elections are staggered. The next election in the Fall 2009 will be for the Presiding Judge position.

At the special election in November 2007 the voters approved the charter change for the qualifications for the position of Presiding Judge as follows:

At least 30 year of age
Of good moral character with no felony convictions
Admitted to the practice law for five (5) years
Resident of the city for at least five (5) years preceding the day of election or appointment

The qualifications for Judge Pro Tempore are the same as for the presiding judge. The qualifications for the municipal judges other than the presiding judge shall be the same with the exception of the law practice. For further information see Yuma City Code Charter Article XI Municipal Court.
