1/25/2011Prescription drug abuse in teens and adults is a growing trend. In addition, many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.
The prescription drug collection program offers the public a means to anonymously deposit their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs. The collection box is located in the lobby of the Yuma Police Department at 1500 South 1st Avenue.
The prescription drug collection program is anonymous. Participants are encouraged to remove or "black out" their personal information from the prescription labels. Participants may dispose of medication in its' original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. All of the medications collected from this program are destroyed by incineration.
Acceptable items include:
- All expired, unused or unwanted controlled, non-controlled and over the counter medications. Liquid products, such as cough syrup should remain sealed in their original container.
Unacceptable items include:
- Syringes, intra-venous solutions, injectables, illegal substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines, personal/business mail and general trash items.
