YPD currently has five K-9 Officers consisting of one narcotics-based K-9 Unit and four Patrol Service Dogs assigned to the Field Services Division. The Patrol Service Dogs are used primarily a "locating tool" and they are trained in areas such as: building/area searches, tracking and apprehension of serious offenders in flight, in addition to being crossed-trained in narcotics detection.

All of our K-9's are Belgium Malinois that have over 500 hours of training and multiple certifications. Tina, our narcotics-based and most tenured dog, was acquired from the United States Border Patrol K-9 Program in 2008 for approximately $4,000.  The four Patrol Service Dogs were purchased from Adlerhorst International Incorporated for approximately $9,600 per dog. These K-9's were purchased through funding by Yuma County RICO (Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations) funds. RICO funds are generated by law enforcement activities that result in asset forfeiture proceedings. Once forfeited, proceeds are deposited into the County RICO fund and are expended in accordance with state and federal laws and guidelines.
