Jerry Stuart was born in Yuba City, California, on July 28, 1939 and is descended from a pioneer California family. He was educated in local schools, spent his Junior Year in college on a study tour of Europe, and returned to attend the University of California, Davis, graduating with Honors as a History and Language major. He was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Key and Phi Kappa Phi Key from the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Master's Degree. He was awarded one of two national fellowships from the Lilly Foundation to study rare books at Indiana University's Lilly Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts and then began his professional career as Head of the Rare Book Department of Cornell University Libraries. After four years at Cornell, he was hired by the Huntington Library in San Marino California as their Bibliographer of Scholarly Collections, later being promoted to Head of Acquisitions.
Jerry retired to Yuma in late 1975, where he met and married Lenore Lorona. Together they engaged in the international rare book trade as well as owning retail stores until Lenore was elected to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors in 2000. She is now in her third term. Jerry served a four year term on the Yuma City Council from January 1992 to January 1996.
Jerry is a member of Rio Colorado Chapter of the Arizona Historical Society, the Yuma Fine Arts Association, immediate past chair of the Yuma Library Foundation, and Life Member of the Friends of the Libraries, and belongs to the local chapter of the NAACP.
He currently is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
