Councilmember Douglas J. Nicholls began his term on July 17th, 2009. He was appointed to his position after the departure of Councilmember Hieb prior to the expiration of this elected term. Mayor Nelson and the remaining city councilmembers appointed Councilmember Nicholls at the July 15th council meeting, with an official swearing-in on August 5th.
Councilmember Nicholls was raised in Yuma and attend Yuma High School. In 1994, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Arizona State University and continued post-baccalaureate studies in Transportation Engineering. After graduation, he remained in the Phoenix area working for international engineering firms. He married his high school sweetheart, Danette, in 1995. They have grown their family to include four children.
In 1999, Councilmember Nicholls and his wife decided to return to Yuma to focus on raising their growing family. After working for a local engineering firm, he established the civil engineering firm of Core Engineering Group, PLLC in 2004. While Core practices in commercial and residential engineering services, Core specializes in transportation and municipal projects for the State of Arizona, Yuma County and various cities. Core has been nominated for the Workplace Excellence Award in three consecutive years, while being awarded Runner-up in the Small Business Category in 2008.
Upon returning to his childhood hometown, Councilmember Nicholls has been working on the growth of the Yuma community though his participation in professional and charitable organizations. He is vice-chairman of the Greater Yuma Economic Development Corporation, a state officer in the Arizona Society of Professional Engineers, and a Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 8092. He is a member of Arizona Town Hall and participated in the town hall convened on transportation. He is a member of Rotary Club of Yuma, American Society of Civil Engineers, St. Francis School Dads Club and Arizona Western College Engineering Advisory Board.

I feel that with current financial situation the country is in, we as a community need to be evermore active in addressing those issues to this growth and development, but to be able to come out ahead when the national economy is fully recovered.”
